Why do emailed files sometimes arrive late or out of order?

When you email a document to your Enoch File cabinet — or forward one from another account — the file usually shows up within a few minutes. Most of the time, you won’t think about it. But two patterns can surprise a first-time user, and both are normal.

If you email a document to Enoch File from your phone while you’re out running errands, it will almost always be sitting in your Unfiled Drawer by the time you get back to your desk.

If instead you send yourself an email and log in a few seconds later expecting to see it, you may be watching an empty Unfiled Drawer for a few minutes. That’s normal. Give it a little time and the file will appear.

The general expectation: emailed files arrive anywhere from fifteen seconds to fifteen minutes. In rare cases it can take up to an hour, but that’s the outer edge.

Emails sent close together can arrive out of order

If you send two or three emails to Enoch File within ten or fifteen minutes of each other, they may not appear in the order you sent them. It’s fairly common for the first-sent email to actually land after the second. For most workflows this doesn’t matter — the files are all there once things settle — but it’s worth knowing so you don’t rely on arrival order matching send order. Confirm each file arrived, and file them in the sequence you intended.

A quick reminder about what actually gets saved

If a file you emailed never shows up — even after an hour — the most likely explanation isn’t a delay. It’s that the email didn’t qualify to be saved in the first place. Two conditions matter:

  • The email has an attachment, or its subject line ends with -ALL (which saves the message body as a text file).
  • Emails without an attachment and without -ALL are silently discarded.

The inbound email system is designed to receive attachments, not to replace your normal email. For the full walkthrough on how emailing files works, see How to Email a File to Enoch File.

You’ll find the Unfiled Drawer as the first item in the Utility Menu.
