Missing emails and how to find them

You forwarded an important PDF from your inbox to your Enoch File address — a benefits enrollment form, a signed lease, a photo of a serial number — and now you’re back at your desk expecting to see it. It’s not there. Before assuming something went wrong, here’s the sequence to work through.

Every file that arrives by email lands first in your Unfiled Drawer. It’s not filed automatically into a cabinet or drawer of your choosing — it stops there so you can review each item and decide where it belongs.

You’ll find the Unfiled Drawer in the Utility Menu. Open it, look through what’s there, and if the missing file is waiting, use the Move function to send it to its permanent destination.

The Utility Menu in Enoch File with a red arrow pointing at the Review Emailed Files option at the top of the menu.

If the email you sent is very recent — within the last few minutes — it may simply still be on its way. Files emailed to Enoch File usually arrive anywhere from fifteen seconds to fifteen minutes, though in rare cases delivery can take up to an hour. See Why do emailed files sometimes arrive late or out of order? for what to expect.

If it’s still not there, here are the usual causes

Section titled “If it’s still not there, here are the usual causes”

Every mail system sets a ceiling on attachment size, and larger files often exceed it. Videos are the most common offender, but the same thing happens with high-resolution photos, multi-page or high-DPI scans, CAD drawings, 3D-printing exports, and large design files.

When a file is too large, one of two things happens: the email bounces back to you with a “message too large” error, or the sending mail system silently strips the attachment before delivery. Either way, nothing arrives at Enoch File — there was no attachment to save by the time the message got here.

The fix is to skip email entirely and upload the file directly from your computer or your phone. See Why can’t I email this video to Enoch File? for both paths.

Enoch File’s inbound email system is designed to receive attachments — that’s its whole purpose. An email that arrives with no attachment is silently discarded on receipt.

There’s one exception. If you added -ALL to the end of the subject line before sending, the body of the message is saved as a text file even when there’s no attachment. Without -ALL, a body-only email leaves no trace.

If you’re not sure whether your email actually had an attachment, check your Sent folder in the account you sent it from — sometimes what looks like an attached file is actually an inline image, a signature graphic, or a linked file (like a Google Drive or Dropbox link) rather than a true attachment. See What happens to the email body when I email a file to Enoch File? for the full picture on how bodies and attachments are handled.

Occasionally a file is in your cabinet but isn’t turning up where you expect. Running Reindex and Clean Up from the Utility Menu rebuilds Enoch File’s search index and often surfaces files that had slipped from view. See Reindex and Clean Up for the full walkthrough.

If all your emails but one make it through, it is probably one of the issues identified above. If no emails are arriving, that’s when it’s worth reaching out. Contact support with the date and time you sent the email, the address you sent it from, and the subject line — those three details make it much faster to trace what happened.
