Understanding Cabinets, Drawers, and Folders

Enoch File organizes your documents the way a real filing cabinet does — and if you've ever used a physical filing cabinet, you already understand how it works.

Cabinets are the top level. Think of each cabinet as a separate piece of furniture in your office. You might have one cabinet for personal documents and another for business. Most people start with one cabinet and add more as their needs grow.

Drawers are inside cabinets, just like the drawers on a real filing cabinet. Each drawer holds a category of documents. During setup, we suggest drawers like Medical, Financial, Insurance, Legal, and others — but you can name them anything and add or remove them at any time.

Folders are inside drawers. These let you subdivide a drawer's contents. For example, your Medical drawer might have folders for each family member, or your Financial drawer might have folders for each year.

**Files **are the documents and other files you upload. They can be PDFs, office documents, google docs, images, audio files, videos and many other formats. (Just bear in mind that not all will work in the preview mode.) Files can be store in a drawer or in a folder.

Here's how they nest:

Cabinet → Drawer → Folder → Files

Cabinet → Drawer → Files

A few tips for organizing well:

  • Don't overthink it at the start. Pick the drawers that match the paperwork in your life and add more later.
  • If you find yourself creating lots of folders inside folders, consider whether a new drawer might be cleaner. Enoch File supports one level of folders inside a drawer — keeping things simple and easy to navigate.
  • Use the Archive for drawers and files you don't need regularly but don't want to delete. Archived items are hidden from your main view but easy to retrieve.
  • Remember that you can move files, folders, and even drawers between cabinets at any time. You can also copy them so that a file can be stored in two places.
